About this deal

Describing how he managed to sign up Buble for the bedtime series, Davenport told BBC Breakfast: “I was pretty surprised to see the Iggle Piggle song (from In The Night Garden) being sung by none other than Michael Buble. Voiced by actress Nina Sosanya, the series breaks new ground in its technical ambition and is based on the latest insights into how pre-school children explore their innate curiosity. In The Night Garden and Teletubbies creator Move over Tinky Winky and Igglepiggle – meet Moon Baby, Colly Wobble and the magical Pepi Nana, with her catchphrase “tiddle toddle!”.

Davenport, 53, who has a BSc in speech sciences, conducted his own academic research before embarking on the project. “I was interested in the literary storm of ‘toy house’ stories in the middle of the nineteenth century which are still in print today,” Davenport told i. Pepi Nana is the main character and her pals include Mr Onion, pictured Credit: WARNING: Use of this image is subject to the terms of use of BBC Pictures' Digital Picture All the friends are reading books together and thinking of their favourite stories. Colly Wobble's favourite story is a song about a 'Horsey in the House'! The series eschews CGI. “We use puppetry to make the toys come alive and stop motion animation for Moon Baby. We’re trying to make a different world that doesn’t look like anything else out there. It’s a handcrafted with 500 individually-designed props and furnishings. The viewer is at eye level and sees the whole toy house.” In The Night Garden was another billion-pound hit for Davenport (BBC) Davenport emerged with “a show that wears its emotional heart on its sleeve. Pepi Nana and her friends share books, write letters to each other, draw pictures, make things, invent things and go in search of adventure together.” ‘Tiddle-toddle’

Pepi Nana is the favourite doll of the child we see putting her to bed in the Toy House at the beginning of every Moon and Me episode. I wonder if the murky world of the internet, which has taken over culture in the 20 years since Teletubbies landed, plays any part in his writing. Davenport says Moon and Me had to be versatile to different formats, and accepts that lots of viewers will be watching on phones and tablets. Teletubbies was actually conceived as a way of helping children understand the new world of screens, but it seems almost quaint compared to the technology today. What does Davenport make of it? Colly Wobble finds an upside-down crown in the curiosity box, and decides to play being the Upside-Down Princess. In Storyland, everyone visits the Upside-Down Castle for a comical tea. More Pepi Nana says “tiddle toddle” because those kinds of sounds are how children learn to play with language, says Davenport, who has no children of his own but plenty of godchildren. Moon Baby, Lambkin, Mr Onion, Sleepy Dibillo, Colly Wobble, Pepi Nana, Little Nana (BBC) Even now, Davenport is glad of the chance to explain how much thought goes into his hit shows. Yet despite his slightly terrifying insight into these unknowable little minds, he still gets extremely nervous before any new programme airs.

We’ve not even started watching Moon and Me, the new CBeebies show by Teletubbies creator Andrew Davenport, and it’s already a hit in our house. The show is aimed at children who are pre-school age, and has been creator by Andrew Davenport, who was also behind Teletubbies and In The Night Garden. A Hollywood entertainment company, Bento Box Entertainment, partnered with Davenport’s Foundling Bird business to bring to produce Moon and Me, which is designed to relax toddlers and prepare them for sleepy-time. Magical Toy House The show creator said: “I was amazed to see Michael Bublé sing the Igglepiggle song from In the Night Garden in a TV interview, so cheekily asked if he would like to perform a song in Moon and Me. We just hadn’t prepared for that kind of interest at all,” says Davenport. “People’s relatives were getting doorstepped, which is a surprising place to be in thanks to a pre-school children’s television programme. And the show took on a meaning of its own in the culture that was a little uncontrollable, which in hindsight was fine, but did mean a lot of things were said about it that weren’t true.”

The series “taps into children’s innate curiosity and desire to create through their play routines, forming their own imaginary worlds and relationships through their toys.” A ‘HAUNTING’ new CBeebies TV show is giving parents nightmares and some are describing it as worse than most horror films. In the Toy House kitchen, Mr Onion and Pepi Nana find the little toy tub. Little Nana wishes that the little toy tub was a great big tub. More Michael Towner, Commissioning Editor at CBeebies, said it was “vital” for children to experience quality UK-originated pre-school programming.Davenport also banned any computer generated imagery (“quite a fight”), instead turning to puppetry, stop-motion animation and homemade effects. “Children are fascinated by real objects,” he says. “They will be able to see the weave of the fabric, the joins in the wallpaper, the printing on the wallpaper. There’s a joy in seeing the messiness.” Each Davenport series has its own distinct visual style. “With Teletubbies we had to build a believable scale world from a child’s point of view around adult actors in suits.”

Davenport already has plans for fifty more Moon and Me episodes although his shows appear about as regularly as new Kate Bush albums. “I’d love to make the next one in less than ten years time,” he admitted. “This is just the time it takes to develop a show like this. Moon and Me just felt like the right thing to do next.”I thought it was incredible, considering it is a silly song, he was taking it so incredibly seriously.”
