About this deal

If you can live without the 300mm focal length, but not with the gap, then Nikon's 55-200mm AF-S VR may fit the bill. that means you can fill the frame with something as small as 2-1/4 x 3-1/3 inches (55 x 85mm), from 4. Cons:- Build quality, despite the metal mount which is ok, the plastic body may not please those who shoot under harsh conditions and look for something affordable, but then again something had to be sacrificed to be light. However, the issue with beginner-level cameras is that they do not have an inbuilt motor, and autofocus is one essential feature that comes in handy in wildlife photography. The lens was also designed to be a companion to the 18-55mm VR lens and is also Nikon's most affordable lens with a maximum 300mm focal length.

Ghosting and flare is reasonably well controlled, with strong point sources of light in the frame creating a little flare and loss of contrast in extreme circumstances. After focus is achieved I found I would have to wait at least a second before the stabiliser had caught up with my movements, which means a slow and methodical approach will pay dividends when you are forced to rely on the stabiliser. The lens was designed to be a significant upgrade to the 55-200mm VR, released in 2007, by adding 100mm of focal length and using VR II (vibration reduction). Zooming in/out was a little jerky and not very smooth on my lens sample, but it probably does get better overtime.

Detailed specifications for the lens, along with MTF charts and other useful data can be found in our lens database. For sports, you want the 70-300mm VR, but for general use, heck, I can read a licence plate at a quarter-mile (400 meters) in my images!

Low chromatic aberration at 300mm that doesn't become intrusive in the image quality, only noticeable if you go pixel peeping.

They mention that it is great for close-ups and macros, and the clarity and detail in the image is quite impressive. The zoom ring is gigantic, occupying almost half of the lens barrel, which makes it easy to zoom in and out with your left hand, while holding the camera with your right hand.I was looking for a lens that was not too expensive but had a reasonable focal length to capture wildlife and birds. This pre-owned or refurbished product has been professionally inspected and tested to work and look like new. This powerful zoom lens lets DX-format D-SLR users reach 300mm super-telephoto with clarity and sharpness, thanks to built-in VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization.
