Am I succumbing to peer pressure? Doing anything out of a desire to please one’s peers is spiritually hazardous. We are to follow the Lord Jesus (see John 21:21–22). Those who follow peer pressure in getting a body piercing find themselves in the ironic position of having proclaimed their uniqueness through conformity. I am known as a pioneer in the field for innovating techniques, aftercare, and piercing placements. I am credited (by Jim Ward in his book, " Running the Gauntlet," BMEzine, Pain Magazine, and others) with the popularity of the tongue piercing; and inventing, naming, and popularizing a number of specific piercing placements including the fourchette, and lorum. I also perfected and popularized the triangle piercing. I then established my own piercing-only studio, Rings of Desire, Inc., in New Orleans. It was the French Quarter's only licensed body art business for over 12 years. It was also the first to receive a Commercial Body Art permit once the field became regulated. Rings of Desire closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and I now reside in the peaceful paradise of Merida, Mexico, in the Yucatan. This highly contagious virus makes travel, and my job itself, particularly risky. I spend thirty minutes or a full hour with each client in a small, enclosed room, one after the next, for eight or more hours per shift. I do that day after day. Unfortunately, that is not going to be safe until something significant changes.

What is my motivation for getting a body piercing? Our motives are important in any decision we make (Proverbs 16:2), especially something as permanent and potentially life-changing as a body piercing. In 1 Kings 18, we find the story of Elijah contesting the evil prophets of Baal (a false god of that day whose followers practiced witchcraft). The prophets of Baal worked themselves into a frenzy trying to get their god, Baal to show himself mightier than the true and living God. However, the God of Elijah proved to be the true God. During the frenzy of the Baal worshipers they began to disfigure their bodies as we see from this scripture in 1 Kings 18:28: “And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.”I have not resigned myself to becoming infected, and I am continuing to avoid risks as much as possible. I have spoken to groups of medical professionals about body piercing, including the Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN) at their World Congress, HIV/AIDS Health Educators of Louisiana, ER staff at Tulane Hospital, Louisiana State University, and the American Urological Association. I presented a course on the safe care of patients with piercings at their 2015 conference. I have also educated both students and staff at Colleges and Universities, including Yale and Northwestern University. The PA looks like a severe puncture of the male organ. However, the piercing traverses only a very small amount of tissue, encompassing much less skin than the average earlobe piercing. In fact, it goes through some of the thinnest pierceable tissue on the body. Because it goes through the urethra, men are often concerned about whether the Prince Albert piercing is more dangerous, harder to heal, or more susceptible to infections. To the surprise of many, it is an easy piercing both to receive and to heal. Your own urine is not harmful to the piercing. In fact, it functions much like the saltwater treatments that are suggested to promote healing. Several factors can help you and your piercer decide whether the piercing should be placed to the left or right of the web if it can’t go in the center. The piercer should look for visible blood vessels and, obviously, select the other side. He can also see if one side lines up better with your urethra; the jewelry will sit straighter when the piercing aligns with it. Our young people do not realize what they are doing has its roots in witchcraft and the practices of false religions. Those that have made trips to other parts of the world have viewed the bodies of those who have not only pierced and tattooed their bodies but have gone further, with mutilating their bodies. It is repulsive to see someone deform the body that the Lord made in perfection. The Lord admonishes us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”If we are to glorify God in our bodies, how do body piercings glorify Christ?

To quote body art industry trade magazine Pain Magazine (August 2003) featured artist section: "Elayne is not only credited with bringing piercing to the mainstream, she is also responsible for developing much of the industry that's now taken for granted—including tongue piercing." Many of the young people in our society here in the USA are embracing a dangerous “little fox” or seemingly “little thing” that may seem harmless. The young people are saying that it is a “trendy” thing to do. Many of them are showing off multiple ear, nose, tongue, eyebrow and navel jewels and rings attached to their pierced flesh. Some even have this done on unspeakable parts of their bodies. These are abnormal and unnatural.

Unfortunately, I have decided that it is just too risky to pursue traveling and piercing until the pandemic situation is under control. Below is an excerpt from the message I sent to the clients who were in my schedule to be pierced during my remaining 2020 trips that were scheduled for Atlanta and Detroit:

Also, we should consider what the Old Testament Law had to say about the related issue of cutting the flesh and marking the body. The command to Israel was “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:28). It seems the common practice among the nations surrounding Israel was to cut, lance, or somehow scar the body “for the dead”; that is, cutting oneself was part of a pagan mourning ritual or possibly a superstitious rite to aid the spirits of the departed. We see this type of behavior in action in Elijah’s day, as Baal-worshipers “slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed” (1 Kings 18:28). It is safe to say that, if a certain body piercing hints at paganism or honors a false philosophy, then it is sinful. Where do I draw the line? According to Guinness World Records, the record for total body piercings is 453 (male) and 462 (female). Those considering multiple piercings should be able to answer the question “how much is too much?” with specificity. At what point does body modification become extreme? How far can Christians go and still “honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:20)? Beyond piercings, questions should be asked about scarification, branding, facial flesh tunnels, skin implants, split tongues, pointed ears, sharpened teeth, and other things promoted within the modern bodymod community.I have also participated with Doctors at the University of South Alabama in a fascinating research study, specifically about the Vertical Clitoral Hood (VCH) piercing and female sexual satisfaction!! Positive results were published in the prestigious (and conservative) American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. MY SPECIALTY- I specialize exclusively in genital piercings for adults of all genders ( women, men and others), as well as nipple piercings. I refer to my colleagues for other piercings. As of this date, I am hopeful that I will still be able to make all of my planned travel and that it will be safe for clients to come and get pierced. I realize this is an optimistic stance, but I'm an optimistic person. If there are any changes, I'll post here immediately. I do an extensive amount of research on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, and based on the medical and scientific findings, there was no other conclusion to be reached. Just this week, the U.S. continues to set records for new coronavirus case numbers, and hospitalizations are up (so it isn’t just from expanded testing). A new study shows that approximately 1 in 10 cases suffers from an ongoing illness. [i] Even mild cases can have distressing and long-lasting effects. [ii] I would really like to avoid any of that.
