On the nose: truth be told, based on the color, I initially assumed a bourbon cask, but on the first few whiffs, I'm getting raisins, sun rype bar/fruit roll up, bit of chocolate fudge which tells me that there's a fairly vibrant sherry cask at work here. Hailing from the Craigellachie distillery, this single malt spent a dozen years maturing, including a finish in an oloroso sherry octave cask. Also more fudge, some soft oak, faint grass, cloth, and butter, and that tropical fruit note that comes with the distillate. The mouth feel is succulently creamy and thick, blending well with the caramel sweetness and fruity tang.

Seriously vaulted company swims in those waters as well, so the Craigellachie 17 has rather a lot to live up to.The flavours more or less pick up where the nose left off, with perhaps less input from the sulphur and fruit, and more from the honeys and malt. Again, there’s depth and a bit of dark and dirty character here, all sitting on a well-rounded, medium body with a bit of a dry mouthfeel before going into a warming, slightly peppery-spiced , drying and lingering finish. Although this was once standard in Jerez with the rise of bespoke casks for the whisky industry the practice has now been outlawed. Considered old fashioned even in 1891, its fruity, muscular flavour stems from our use of worm tub condensers.

I am not a fan of the Craigellachie character overall, as it sometimes leans too much into sulfur, but here it matters not. It matured for 12 years in a pair of casks, a first-fill olorsoo sherry hogshead and a refill hogshead.Craigellachie gave me one of the best whisky moments of my life this year (on the beach next to the distillery as it happens, if you’ll forgive me being a bit smug).
