About this deal

A thought provoking exploration of what it takes to get through tough times and a compelling endorsement of the power of others to hold us up’. There was, you know, we’re often given icons of resilience and you know, these people and were told, oh, wow, look at these person, look at how they’ve transcended their situation.

Personal control is an integral part of what it is to be human, affecting our self-esteem and controlling our feelings of stress and confidence. Whereas having actions dictated to you or feeling that options have been limited by forces outwith your control disempowers people and makes it harder to access inner strength. Life is a struggle; it is a demanding test, not only for us as individuals, but also for us as a nation. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Bruce Daisley thinks this is simply untrue, and in his new book the Sunday Times best-selling author of The Joy of Work takes the notion of resilience apart, explains how it really works, and puts forward a new programme for building self-confidence and tenacity.Along the way we take in TikTok, Elon Musk, the tombstone aesthetic, and why the platform you build for your book is at least as important as the book itself. Bestselling author Bruce Daisley joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky to talk about his new book, Fortitude: Unlocking the Secrets of Inner Strength, which is out tomorrow (25th August). He guides you on how to best find inner strength, and how this can often be found through external connection – an essential factor for enhancing personal control and establishing a strong sense of self.

FORTITUDE distills and consolidates crucial elements from ancient philosophy, modern psychology, the SEAL ethos, and Dan Crenshaw's personal experiences as a leader and warrior into a clear and pragmatic guide for any person who wants to confront the challenges of life with courage, tenacity, and fortitude. In my post-Twitter, time-to-read-the-classics self-improvement, self-exploration phase, this book was on the top of the pile. Investigating the science of trauma reveals the lasting effects adverse events can have on an individual. I spoke to someone who works in an NHS hospital and she said to me, oh my God, if you mention resilience around here, people will thump you.Walpole wrote horror novels that tended more towards the psychological rather than supernatural, with a brooding underlying mysticism.

Of course this is only what I wanted at the end, probably not what the auhtor intended to be included at the end. It felt simultaneously like this Willow the Wisp, because we witness resilience around us all the time.

And so, you know, I put all of my learning into that and you know, the book process, when you get… there’s something lovely when someone you don’t know, you’ve never met, in a completely different part of the country, contact you and say something. Too often we look to heroic figures as role models of success and perseverance but fail to consider the diverse range of issues that shroud this awe.

As someone who has served our country on the front lines in Afghanistan, Dan Crenshaw knows what it means to separate the trivial from the truly meaningful. They compared them to people in the same sport, who received the same funding, who maybe went to games but got a bronze or got to the games and didn’t place.
