About this deal

Palate (undiluted): slightly oily texture yet still somewhat light-bodied. It's a bit briny, however there are lots of deep, dark flavours here; it's ashy on arrival, develops some pepperiness, and a touch of tobacco. Laing: “We believe he has a great future. We continue to invest heavily into our relationships with the Islay distilleries of our choice. We have so much fun with Big Peat in terms of special editions also. We’ve had special bottlings for the Netherlands, Japan, Paris, Edinburgh, Berlin and London. It’s a lot of fun putting him in a striped jersey for Paris or a rugby jersey for the World Cup in Japan. I think the US market might see some specials through the course of next year.”Behind him is what appears to be the coastal village of what looks like Portnahaven. In reality, the Rinns of Islay lighthouse is somewhat further in the distance but it works nicely for the purposes of the label. Big Peat is a remarkable blended malt Scotch whisky from Douglas Laing, an independent bottler and blender of Scotch whisky. It is a key player within the company's Remarkable Regional Malts series, which aims to represent and celebrate the unique qualities of each whisky-producing region in Scotland. Big Peat, in particular, embodies the robust and untamed spirit of the Islay region, known for its heavily peated, smoky whiskies. You would expect that Big Peat demands bold flavours to match its smoky character. However, this isn’t necessarily the case! Nevertheless, weaker or milder pairings may struggle against its wisps of smoke. A lot of people said they couldn’t buy it, such as our importers. At trade shows people wouldn’t drink from the bottle. Initially I had to send cases for free. I told them: ‘You’re an old generation like me, but please remember there’s a younger generation for whom life is still fun’.” I like this, a little more with water than without. I admit though, that this is probably suited to a cooler season of the year.

It is very sweet on the nose – think vanilla and yellow apples – with a bit of smoke bacon and some sea salt. There is a lightly medicinal touch and some cow stable. But the whole is quite soft. The flavour of the finish is medium to short, but then my tongue feels like an ash tray. 21/25 With water, the ashtray is cleaner and a little menthol on the finish. (22/25)

Welcome!

An authentic Scottish summer doesn’t always bring blue skies and golden rays, but come rain or shine, our feisty Ileach fisherman is ready to embrace a smoke-filled beach barbecue in celebration of Fèis Ìle,” marketing director Cara Laing said in a news release. “Hand-selected for their charred meat, salty sea-air flavour profile, this remarkable limited edition is a marriage of Single Cask Single Malts, only from Islay. Big Peat looks forward to headlining the Islay Festival with a series of tasting events, both in person and online, bringing the true taste of Islay to whisky enthusiasts the world over. After all, he is Seriously Committed to SMOKE!” Meanwhile, candied fruit marmalade adds an element of zest while a warm malt cereal nose adds a touch of vanilla softness. Additionally, I couldn’t help but notice a touch of woollen lint in there too. Balance: Excellent balance between the nose and the palate. A little thin, but a pleasant dram. 21/25 Buy it here (Dan Murphy’s) Buy it here (Vintage Cellars) Buy it here (The Whisky Exchange) Kilchoman | Image: Supplied 8. Kilchoman

I have this bottle for several months now. I have tasted it initially and was disappointed, so I elected to let is rest for while after 3-4 drams. The air that fills the gap of the missing dram usually help to open up the whisky. I often find that the first dram of a bottle is not as good as the next dram taken few weeks later. Mouth: Warm and balanced, more honey, spices and dark earthy peat with hints of salt. With water added: some citrus, oranges and grilled fruit reveal themselves, this dram definitely needs a few drops of water to reveal the underlying sugary and fruity notes In terms of the best occasion to enjoy this whisky, it’s certainly a fantastic casual dram to enjoy alone or with friends. Although not overly complex and quite youthful in character, it does have a smooth texture, which is particularly apparent during the heart. To set the rhythm for the palate, its rich candied citrus opening offers marmalade, festive mince pies with a generous dash of sea brine.

Finish: Medium-long. A swath of menthol and a hint of orange peel. The same peat notes from the palate continue here, but fade without change. A ghost of cherry or tart plum concludes the finish. Starting out with the obvious, Ardbeg’s whiskies are some of the most famous smoky scotch brands in the world. They’re a great place to start if you’re in the nascent stages of peat appreciation. The ten-year-old expression is very pale in colour, with a very classic style of Islay peat on the nose; light flavours at the front palate showing lots of iodine, as is to be expected of peat cut from coastal bogs. I would strongly suggest avoiding the water with Big Peat. I had my first dram neat then added a couple of tiny drops of water for my second, and it just made everything (especially the nose) go limp. Like your grandmother walking into the room after you’ve just leafed through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. You know what I mean.
