The sort that kids tolerate but adults "ooh and aah" over feeling they're doing their parental duty by reading these fascinating works of children's literature and enriching their lives, where the child really just wants to know how much Dragons Love Tacos. Almost all of Eric Carle's work feels that way to me. I remember hating him as a kid, yet adults love to read him. However they pathetically ran away whenever things got even the slightest bit difficult. As a result, the story is essentially plotless. Furthermore, the book placed at number 199 in the Big Read, a 2003 poll conducted by the BBC to determine the United Kingdom's best loved books. [20] Five years later, School Library Journal survey of readers named The Very Hungry Caterpillar as the second-best children's book. [4] a b Wiseman, Donna L. Nnnnngh. Just... nnnngh. Hungry by H.A. Swain has such an interesting concept. What would a future look like where food is irrelevant? And how would that future fall apart if its citizens started feeling hungry again? Unfortunately, I couldn't quite stomach what the author was dishing up. I guess you could say it didn't quite cut the mustard. Actually, some parts really cheesed me off. While some of the questions raised were definitely food for thought, this story just wasn't something I could sink my teeth into. Joseph Romm (March 19, 2012). Thalia Apple, yes that is her name, is the main character of the story. She lives in a world where there is no food..NONE..we killed the world at some point in a war and now there are no animals or plants, nothing. The people in the book live by taking meds to make them not hungry and it's supposed to be nutritional and stuff. At about 90% in, the book enters this crazy, non-stop action ‘omg what’s going to happen’ phase. Its built up so much that you just know something bad is going to happen and I started to wonder how anyone is going to get out of this and how this book was going to be wrapped up in 10%. Well, basically, it just ended. It was so abrupt that I was left feeling unsatisfied. Now, I just want to say, I’m not upset or dissatisfied with how the story ended for our characters, it’s more the way it was so rushed that ultimately I felt let down.

The only reason I continued to read this book was because it was so comical that I found it interesting to see what the author came up with next—though I doubt that was her intention.Besides the promotion of drug use (look at that thing's eyes... and he obviously has the munchies!) I dislike that the author couldn't come up with some differing foodstuffs... come on... salami AND sausage? Chocolate cake AND a cupcake? And the line that says "Now he wasn't hungry any more - and he wasn't a little caterpillar anymore" drives me INSANE! Where is the parallelism? I always want to read it as: Now he wasn't hungry any more - and he wasn't little anymore. (In fact, sometimes I DO read it wrong on purpose!)
