In summary the new 650D / Rebel T4i is the most complicated yet friendly mid-range Canon DSLR yet, truly a camera that you can grow into as your photography skills develop. It only misses out on our highest Essential award because of the still slow Live View auto-focusing and a small price increase over the 600D, but is more than deserving of our still-coveted Highly Recommended award. The EOS 650D (Rebel T4i in North America) is equipped with a new 18-megapixel Hybrid CMOS sensor and powerful Digic 5 processor, that enables you to capture excellent, full-resolution images at up to five frames per second (fps). The new Canon EOS 650D is a user-friendly enthusiast-level D-SLR full of new tech and functions, including a new touch-screen, and much more than a simple upgrade from the Canon EOS 600D (which it now sits above in the range). As well as helpful intelligent auto modes there are a wealth of advanced features available as your camera skills and photography progresses.

Varies depending on the subject, memory card brand and capacity, image recording quality, ISO speed, drive mode, Picture Style, Custom functions etc. The Canon EOS 650D's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 30 seconds, aperture of f/8 at ISO 100. Here is a 100% crop of the image to show what the quality is like.The 650D’s image processor has also been upgraded to the DIGIC 5 version, and while this isn’t quite as fast as the DIGIC 5 processor used in Canon’s flagship EOS 1Dx and 5D Mark III models, it does offer a six-fold increase in processing speeds over the old DIGIC 4. Sensitivity, meanwhile, ranges from ISO 100-12,800 in standard mode, with an extended mode of ISO 25,600 making the 650D a stop faster than its predecessor. The 650D has roughly the same dimensions as the 600D, and apart from the touchscreen has largely the same physical controls as previous models. One notable difference is that the two-position power switch of the 600D is replaced with a three-position switch on the 650D, with the added position used to activate the video shooting mode. What makes this Canon camera different is that it's the first-ever D-SLR to feature a touch-screen. We've grown to expect smartphones, tablets and some compact cameras to have touch-screen control, but this is big move for Canon's D-SLRs, and is set to revolutionise the D-SLR industry. The EOS 650D's built-in pop-up flash features a built-in Integrated Speedlite Transmitter for controlling up to two groups of off-camera Speedlites without the need for an external transmitter. Note that it doesn't have a more advanced PC Sync port for connecting the camera to external lights, limiting the 650Ds use in studio environments. There's also the expected hotshoe for use with one of Canon's external flashguns.
