The Shadows of London (Joseph Bridgeman series, Book 2

Madam Petit is hosting a tea party and has invited Jesse Lindvall to attend. A strange man takes the initiative to speak with Caroline when she is feeling insecure... Historical crime fiction then? Yes and no. In one sense, almost all my novels start in the present because that’s where I find my themes. I started thinking about this book when the newspapers were full of the unsavoury exploits of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein. History rarely repeats itself but it’s certainly a place of familiar echoes. One of them is the ruthlessness which men bring to the pursuit of power. Another is their desire to possess beautiful young women, and to do so on their own terms. Occasionally society holds such men to account but usually the customary rules of decent behaviour do not apply. Caroline visits the Eastern District again, to investigate the cause of her parents' deaths. She encounters a bizarre person in the workhouse in Saint George. While window shopping in Petticoat Lane Market, Caroline spots a busy Priscilla. She gathers up her courage and follows her, and after passing through various alleyways, they arrive at a tightly shut door...Vincent tries to help Caroline hide from the vampire, but he is wounded and too weak. The situation is dire, and using herself as bait, Caroline enters the woods alone, trying to shake off the enemy. Sheer brilliance ... Truly, this is breathtaking. The combination of emotional literacy, with beautiful language and an utterly immersive sense of time and place is perfect.' She doesn't get acquainted with her classmates, except one... And that jarred me – is this the root of my whole problem with this series? I do not associate I with Marwood. In the book, I think of I as Cat. I am a woman. So the question comes, is Andrew Taylor actually writing for male readers?
