About this deal

Fantastic and thrilling game, it really delves into the intricacies of football and immerses you fully in the game. Some rolls may be for player duels, where each player may be using the same or different skill depending on the player and the action, in these cases the players are not looking for a total but competing directly against each other, with the higher result winning, while a tie will result in a loose ball. There are times in some games when it feels like the dice are broken and the only reason you lost is luck but this is true for all games that use dice and when I sit and think about it, on balance, it’s a great system.

A lot of time with the game then but my son is adamant that we can only play something else if we have played Counter Attack several times that day! To pass through the air with a high pass or long pass there must not be a defender in the immediate square next to your player in the direction you want to pass the ball, and you will be checking for accuracy. This process repeats (with first pick passing between managers) until each manager has one goalkeeper and a squad of 15 outfield players. If you imagine ‘Subbuteo’ without the flicking, ‘Football Manager’ without the keyboard and ‘Risk’ without the horses you’ll be most of the way to imagining ‘Counter Attack’. Reckless tackle - Sometimes you just want to foul your opponent, and in this situation announce reckless tackle before you attempt it. There is a very active online community for Counter Attack, currently they are nearing the end of the 6th online season, and through this there is a lot of helpful answers to be found for any questions related to the game.

This is a duel between your DRIBBLING and the defender's TACKLING, but the defender gets a +1 bonus for their roll. Normally when checking for accuracy it will be a HIGH PASS check requiring 9+, no matter the distance. Where and how you choose to play your team is up to you and these different approaches and freedom to choose makes Counter Attack such an incredible strategy game. For me, I think if you like football, if you enjoy strategy games, if you like board games, if you ever wanted to manage a team if you think card drafting is fun or if you just appreciate round counters you should own Counter Attack. Now that you've got enough down to play the game lets add all the little gritty bits that cover specific situations or rules that don't come up much.We can play football together, away from the computer, just my son and I while we chat and debate the best move to make. It all depends on your strategy and tactics, based on the skills of the players you draft at the beginning of the game. We found the rule book to be excellent but there are also an awful lot of youtube videos from Colin explaining how you should interpret the rules.

The box contains a “Pitch”, two teams that my son has dubbed Newcastle and Ajax, however, I prefer to think of them as the black and white team and the red and white team.Once finished I thanked him for the game and went on my way around the hall, looking around for other games and tables that might interest me.

Was so excited to get this game, l played with my brother against my 9 year old daughter and his 8 year old son to help us all understand the rules. I then used a ‘ long ball ’ (different from a high pass – it can be played to anywhere on the pitch so long as it’s more than 5 hexes from any player) to bomb the ball up the other end of the pitch where my winger had been loitering. A second yellow card gives a player a red card and they will then be sent off and the counter removed from the board for the rest of the game. There are regular shots, these can only be taken after a move phase when your player has had time to composed himself for the shot. The Classic Game Set comes everything you need to play Counter Attack – the pitch, two teams, 46 player cards, a ball, dice and rule book.

Make sure you have a balanced team – too many tacklers and not enough dribblers might mean you’ll struggle to create chances. Finally the managers will have a final roll off, with the winner taking the kick off for the first half. Next, you deal 4 player cards face up and taking it in turns you take one until they are gone, then you deal four more, switch the player who chooses first and continue until you have 15 outfield players each. With my opponent’s defender within one hex of my striker (defined as their ‘ zone of influence ’) he had the chance to intercept the cross by rolling a 6. The smallest deck of yellow backed cards are the referees, draw one and place him next to the board for the match.
