They start playing shows all over the East Coast, gaining an ever-increasing fanbase. This is where trouble starts. Girls throw themselves at Billy, the lead singer, and he is unsure how to respond. He and Camila start fighting, but he writes a song to show that he still loves her. However, the band wants to go out west, and Camila wants to stay east. She breaks up with Billy, and the band relocates to California. There, they meet Teddy Price, a producer who produces their first studio album. Daisy begins to write and perform her own music. People start to ask her to record a demo, she gets a manager named Hank Allen, and she is signed to a record label. However, the label does not like her songs, and writes songs for her to record. She continues to take drugs.

Daisy is seen drinking and popping pills throughout the show, but the depths of her addiction go largely unexplored. Although Billy is angry about the headline's implication, the flattering cover forces his hand. He realizes that his chemistry with Daisy is good marketing. The TV adaptation often paints Camila as a scorned wife, while the book's version of her is far more content and in control. Eddie loses it at Billy for being controlling and self-centered. You need one person who, when the shit hits the fan, grabs your stuff, throws it in a suitcase, and gets you away from the Italian prince," Daisy says in the book.

In the final episode of the show, Billy and Daisy share another steamy makeout session — but that didn't happen in the book, either. Karen and Graham are a couple but not telling the band. Karen tells Camila about her and Graham, and Camila tells her not to hurt him.
